Rein sportlich ist es für das Aushängeschild des deutschen Fußballs die nächste herbe Enttäuschung. Wie bereits vor vier Jahren in Russland musste der vierfache Weltmeister bereits nach der WM-Vorrunde den Heimflug antreten. Das Scheitern auf dem Platz ist aber nur die eine Seite der Medaille. Beim aktuellen Turnier sind die Grenzen zwischen sportlichem Wettkampf und politischen Inhalten noch weiter verschwommen, als sie es im modernen Sport ohnehin oft tun.

The (political) power of memes has moved beyond virtual images. The distinction between the virtual and ‘real life’ no longer applies, or perhaps was never really there. Their effects (or should we say affects?) are moving through digital infrastructures, policy, regulations, and bodies. If memes are used as a tool by the alt-right to mobilize people to storm the Capitol and play a substantial role in the Ukrainian war, can they also be used by the left to spark a revolution, as memetic warfare is more immediate and accessible than real-life demonstrations?

This project focusses on the game industry, being the largest cultural industry in the world. Its economic growth relies in part on the artistic innovations of non-commercial developers and communities operating beyond the industry’s purview. Policymakers and researchers alike struggle to account for the cultural contexts and creative origins of game development.
