The Australia New Zealand Communication Association (ANZCA) has announced that Prof. Axel Bruns, Australian Laureate Fellow from the QUT Digital Media Research Centre, has been confirmed as a keynote speaker for the highly anticipated ANZCA Conference 2023. The event will take place in Wellington, New Zealand, from November 21st to 24th, 2023.
DMRC researcher wins ICA research award
The QUT Digital Media Research Centre’s Dr TJ Thomson has won a top faculty paper award from the International Communication Association’s Journalism Studies Division for a study on AI-generated images he co-authored with A/Prof. Ryan Thomas at Washington State University in the USA.
Peer reviewers called the pair’s study “imaginative, relevant, [and] deeply meaningful.”

Every year on May 17th, World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) recognizes the importance of information and communication technologies (ICTs), and the wide range of issues present in today’s information society. First celebrated in 1969, WTISD is an initiative of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) aiming to raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of ICTs can bring to societies and economies.

New publication: "From digital inclusion to IT appropriation" by Sol Martinez Demarco
The gender digital divide is a well-known research and policy topic. Policy discourses emphasise the inclusion aspect focusing on equal opportunities and economic empowerment. Critical analyses of the inclusion narrative stress its universalist and normative perspective which implicitly excludes and determines what gender technology inclusion means. This contribution focuses on an alternative perspective developed in Latin America: appropriation of technologies. This approach foregrounds the socio-cultural and economic inequalities present in the Global South.
