As the gap between social experience and the online world narrows, immersive technologies are becoming the next frontier in the digital media landscape. Immersive technology refers to digital media and experiences that aim to fully engage users by enveloping them in a simulated environment, such as an interactive simulation or virtual world. Their goal is to provide a more intuitive interaction with digital content.

On September 26th the Portulans Institute held a roundtable at University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School titled “How the War in Ukraine Could Reshape Global Information, Communication, and Security”. The hybrid event was attended by 32 individuals (with 2 apologies from individuals who contributed a position paper), 16 of those participating in-person.

Vor kurzem wurde die neue Ausgabe des renommierten THE World University Ranking veröffentlicht, das in diesem Jahr 1.904 Universitäten aus 108 Ländern vergleicht. Darin steigerte die Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU) ihren Gesamtscore erneut gegenüber dem Vorjahr. Dieser Gesamtwert liegt jetzt bei 60,4 Punkten (2022: 58,4) und bildet die Leistungen der Universitäten in folgenden fünf Bereichen ab: Forschungsqualität, Forschungsbedingungen, Lehre, Transfer und Internationalisierung.

Forschen gegen Lieferlücken! Der diesjährige Forschungsförderpreis der Vogel Stiftung Dr. Eckernkamp geht an eine interdisziplinäre Forschergruppe an der Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU), die an der Verfügbarkeit von Medikamenten forscht.

SARS-CoV-2, das Virus, das für die Infektionskrankheit Covid-19 mit weltweit bislang fast sieben Millionen Todesfällen verantwortlich ist, hat ein charakteristisches genetisches Profil, das vollständig aus Ribonukleinsäure (RNA) besteht. Diese RNA enthält den Bauplan für die Herstellung neuer Viruskopien. Wenn SARS-CoV-2 eine Zelle infiziert, übernimmt es gewissermaßen den Maschinenraum dieser Wirtszelle, um sich selbst zu kopieren und so zu vermehren. Dabei werden verschiedene Arten von viraler RNA erzeugt, die jeweils eine spezifische Rolle im Replikationszyklus des Virus spielen.

Sie sind Lebensgrundlage, Erholungsraum, Wirtschaftsgut, Medizin und noch einiges mehr: Pflanzen sind mit uns Menschen auf vielfältige Weise verbunden, das wird auch durch die ökologischen Krisen unserer Zeit immer klarer. Deshalb entwickeln sich inzwischen neue kultur- und sozialwissenschaftliche Forschungsbereiche, die die Beziehung von Menschen und Pflanzen genauer unter die Lupe nehmen. Auch an der Julius-Maximilians-Universität (JMU) wird dazu geforscht.
