Als Metrologie bezeichnet man die Wissenschaft des Messens. Ziel dieser Disziplin ist es, weltweit vergleichbare und verlässliche Messergebnisse zu gewährleisten – zum Beispiel in der Industrie oder für Experimente in der Wissenschaft. Eine immer wichtigere Rolle spielen dabei sogenannte Naturkonstanten, also unveränderliche physikalische Größen wie die Lichtgeschwindigkeit oder die Planck-Konstante. Weil deren Werte universell gelten (also unabhängig von Ort und Zeit), erlauben sie die Definition äußerst stabiler Einheiten und sorgen damit für sehr gut reproduzierbare Messergebnisse.
