Prof. Parcu joins the Working Group on Pluralism of Information in Curation and Indexation Algorithms as Chair of the steering committee

The Working Group on Pluralism of Information in Curation and Indexation Algorithms was established by the Forum of Information and Democracy with the aim of gathering input from experts worldwide and providing policy recommendations.

According to the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism 2022 Report, between 32% and 82% of people access news through social media. This growing trend points to the need of developing and implementing new safeguards to guarantee the pluralism of information online.

In this context, The Forum of Information and Democracy has recently established the Working Group on Pluralism of Information in Curation and Indexation Algorithms. The steering committee of the new working group is chaired by our Director Pier Luigi Parcu.

The working group aims at gathering information and provide policy recommendations in two main areas:

  • Personal data protection and privacy, to strengthen existing and upcoming personal data protection and privacy regulation in the context of curation and indexation algorithms;
  • Pluralism of news and information, to improve pluralism of news and information and allow freedom of choice for users.

As part of this work, we are issuing a global call for contributions to gather input from international experts and assemble best practices to inform and enhance our recommendations. Interested scholars and experts may download the call and share their contributions online by 23 October 2022.

The contributions will feed the reflections of the working group and its team of rapporteurs composed of Ayden Férdeline, Eleonora Maria Mazzoli, and Jack Bandy.
