Wie sich Darmbakterien an ihre Umwelt anpassen, ist noch nicht vollständig entschlüsselt. Forschende des Würzburger Helmholtz-Instituts für RNA-basierte Infektionsforschung (HIRI) und der University of California, Berkeley, USA, konnten nun eine wichtige Lücke schließen: Sie haben eine kleine Ribonukleinsäure (sRNA) nachgewiesen, die die Anfälligkeit des Darmkeims Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron gegenüber bestimmten Antibiotika beeinflusst.

Topologische Isolatoren sind Materialien, die elektrischen Strom leiten können, aber nur an ihrer Oberfläche oder an den Kanten. In ihrem Inneren fließt kein Strom. Sie werden weltweit intensiv erforscht, weil sie einzigartige elektronische Eigenschaften besitzen, die zum Beispiel für die Verbesserung der Effizienz von Quantencomputern und für andere Technologien interessant sind, etwa für die Verschlüsselung und sichere Übertragung von Daten.
